Further information

Heathrow's proposed third runway is not just a local issue, although it would destroy a whole village, demolish 700 houses and massively increase noise and air pollution over a huge swathe of West London - the bigger question here is the continuing runaway expansion of aviation and its contribution to the biggest threat facting the world today: the catastrophic destabilisation of global climate.

Aviation is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. If aviation continues to grow at the current rate, then by 2050 it will account for half of what even the government thinks is the most the UK should be emitting by then.

Heathrow's third runway is part of what amounts to the biggest single programme of airport expansion ever contemplated by a UK government, involving a near trebling of air passengers by 2030. This is at a time when the world's most urgent need is to reduce emissions. The government's aviation policy is clearly on a collision course with its climate policy.

The current trend in the expansion of aviation is incompatible with any realistic plan to prevent a climate catastrophe. The people who will suffer soonest and most from this are the world's poorest and most vulnerable - those who never get a chance to fly and whose lifestyles have contributed almost nothing to this problem.

We can and must win this campaign to stop the third runway. And if we do so, it will strengthen campaigns against airport expansion throughout the country and indeed throughout Europe and the world.
